Having your wisdom teeth extracted is a surgical procedure like any other that requires very specific aftercare. Your dentist provided you with specific instructions that you’ll need to follow to care for your mouth while it heals. It’s imperative that you give your body the rest it needs to recover as quickly and effectively as possible. If you’re having a hard time sleeping after your appointment, though, this can be a real challenge! Keep reading to learn 4 tips to help you catch some z’s after wisdom tooth removal.

Tip #1: Elevate Your Head

To reduce swelling in the area and promote blood clotting, you should rest with your head elevated for at least the first night or two. Try using extra pillows to prop it up higher than usual. If you’re laying down immediately post-op, be sure to have someone close by. You may still have gauze in your mouth to slow the bleeding, which can become a choking hazard when you doze off.

Tip #2: Manage Pain

You’re not likely to get quality rest when you’re feeling too achy and swollen to relax. Generally, over-the-counter options like Tylenol and ibuprofen are safe to take and can alleviate discomfort. If your dentist provided a prescription pain medication, be sure to follow the directions in detail. It’s important not to take more than the recommended dosage. If you find it’s not effective, call your dentist rather than pop another pill.

Tip #3: Apply Ice

A 2019 study revealed that applying an ice compress to your face for a few days after your extraction can diminish inflammation. Ice packs are stocked at most pharmacies and are easy to find if you don’t have one at home, or you can use a pack of frozen peas or something similar. Press it to the puffy part of your face for 10 to 20 minutes at a time for a well-deserved reprieve.

Tip #4: Maintain Your Routine

Sleep is a rhythmic cycle and is easier to fall into when you stick with your usual nightly routine which should include brushing and flossing your teeth. While you should try to avoid rinsing your mouth out for 24 hours, after that you can probably gently brush your pearly whites and rinse with warm water while avoiding the surgery site. Sticking with your familiar habits can help you drift off more easily.

Hopefully this information helps you get the rest you need so you can recover and be back on your feet in no time!
