Is your perception of root canals rooted in myth?
The truth about easing pain, saving teeth with this therapy

Happy Smiles understands that when people hear the word “root canal,” many still think, “Ouch!” But this is actually outdated thinking. Due to advanced techniques and technologies, root canal therapy is often compared to a little more extensive than a simple filling among our patients in Clearwater and Tampa, Florida. With today’s pain management techniques and medications, you also won’t feel any uncomfortable sensations during treatment.

It is important to remember that root canal treatments are performed to relieve pain, often intense sensitivity, pressure, and discomfort caused by damage deep within the affected teeth.

Why do I need a root canal?

Any time the innermost part of your tooth is threatened, it can cause intense pain, swelling, and other distressing symptoms that may interfere with your day-to-day life. Without treatment, these conditions can lead to tooth extraction or loss. They can also have other whole-body health consequences; for instance, a dental abscess or infection may spread through the bloodstream. Systemic infections are medical emergencies that require immediate attention. Root canal therapy may be necessary to safeguard oral health and overall well-being.

Conditions or situations that can lead to damage to the pulp tissue inside of your tooth include:

  • Certain types of fractures or cracks
  • Untreated tooth decay or cavities
  • Injuries or trauma that results in pulp damage/inflammation

What symptoms might indicate that I need treatment?

Common symptoms include persistent pain that worsens when biting down or applying pressure to the affected tooth. You may also notice swelling on the gums or even facial swelling that gives you “chipmunk cheeks.” These latter symptoms indicate infections or abscesses that require emergency treatment at our offices or even at the ER if you notice serious accompanying symptoms, like problems with swallowing or breathing. Every patient is unique, and sometimes serious issues can exist within your tooth without you realizing it. So, it’s imperative to stay on top of your regular exams at our office and have your mouth checked even if your teeth feel and look fine.

How is a root canal performed?

This procedure generally involves cleaning out the root canals that contain the inflamed tissue and infection. Think of it as giving your tooth a clean slate. We start with numbing the tooth (if you’re nervous, we can discuss other ways to keep you relaxed, too). Once you are fully numbed, Dr. Mamata Ponnaganti uses precision techniques and special dental instruments to open up the tooth and access the innermost tissues. She removes the inflamed tissue and source of infection. Then, the surrounding root canals are sterilized and reshaped. Lastly, the treated site is sealed off with a filling. And that’s it – at least until we can restore the tooth with a dental crown. You’ll wear a temporary crown while the permanent one is being made to protect the treated site.

Why do I need a crown?

Crowns are generally indicated to prevent further damage. The tooth may still be weak, and this restoration strengthens it. With good oral care at home and at Happy Smiles, you will need no further treatment. Your tooth is saved, and you avoid its extraction and the need for the tooth’s replacement with an implant or bridge!
